Strong Resume Template for IT and Tech Jobs in Australia for Graduates
Tech is one of Australia’s most in-demand and best-paid fields – software development, data science, AI and machine learning, cybersecurity, cloud and DevOps are all crying out for talent. But a computer science degree alone will not get you the interview: tech recruiters and their applicant tracking software scan for specific technologies, real projects and evidence you can actually build things. A generic resume gets filtered out in seconds. This is the complete, specialisation-by-specialisation guide to the tech resume in Australia – what employers want in each field, how to write every section, and full sample resumes for software development, data science, AI/ML, cybersecurity and cloud/DevOps that you can adapt to your own.
I am an international student finishing my Master’s at the University of Melbourne, from a computer science background, and I have written and reviewed a lot of tech resumes. The single biggest lesson: a tech resume is not about listing duties – it is about proving, with skills, projects and numbers, that you can do the work.
The quick version
What Makes a Tech Resume Different
Tech hiring is unusually evidence-driven. A recruiter or hiring manager – and the software that screens resumes before them – is looking for concrete proof you have the specific skills the role needs. Five things set a strong tech resume apart from a generic one:
- A categorised technical-skills section. Not one long list, but grouped – languages, frameworks, tools, cloud, databases – so a reader finds their stack instantly.
- Projects. For graduates with limited work history, projects are the most important thing on the page. They prove you can build real things, not just pass exams.
- A GitHub and portfolio link. In tech, your code speaks for you. A GitHub profile or portfolio site lets employers see your work.
- Quantified impact. “Improved model accuracy from 82% to 91%” or “cut page load time by 40%” beats “worked on machine learning”.
- Exact keyword matching. ATS filters on specific technologies. If the ad says “Python, AWS, Docker”, those exact words must appear where they are true of you.
Australia’s graduate tech market is strong across software engineering, data, AI, cybersecurity and cloud, with formal graduate programs at big employers and a huge number of roles at consultancies, startups and every company that now runs on software. A note for international students: some large graduate programs favour permanent residents, but many employers hire graduate-visa holders and international students, so focus on those and lead with your skills. Now let’s build the resume – starting with the anatomy that applies to every tech role, then a tailored sample for each specialisation.
The Anatomy of a Winning Tech Resume
Every tech resume, whatever the specialisation, is built from the same core sections. Get these right and you have a strong base to tailor for any role.
Header: links matter
Name, suburb and city, phone, a professional email – and, crucially, your GitHub, LinkedIn and portfolio URLs. In tech, these links are where employers verify you can actually do the work, so make them easy to find. If you are on a visa, add a short work-rights line so there is no ambiguity.
Professional summary
Three or four lines naming your specialisation, your strongest technologies and what you are seeking. For example: “Computer science graduate specialising in data science, with strong Python, SQL and machine-learning skills and three end-to-end projects. Seeking a graduate data analyst or data scientist role in Melbourne.” Rewrite it for each role and each specialisation.
Technical skills: categorise them
Do not dump one long list. Group your skills so a reader (and the ATS) finds what they need instantly – for example: Languages (Python, Java, SQL); Frameworks/Libraries (React, pandas, scikit-learn); Tools (Git, Docker, Jira); Cloud/DevOps (AWS, Azure); Databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB). Mirror the exact terms in the job ad wherever they are genuinely true of you. This section is the most keyword-dense on the page, so it does a lot of the ATS work.
Projects: a graduate's secret weapon
This is the section that gets graduates hired. When your work experience is thin, projects prove you can build real things. Include two or three – from your degree (a capstone), personal work, a hackathon or freelance – and write each like a mini job: a name, the tech stack, what it does, what you did, and a result or link. For instance:

Built an end-to-end machine-learning model predicting customer churn from a 10,000-row dataset. Cleaned and engineered features, trained and compared three models, and deployed the best (91% accuracy) as an interactive Streamlit web app.
Always link the code on GitHub. A working project an employer can click into is worth more than any list of skills.
Experience, education and certifications
- Work experience and internships – write achievement bullets with the tech you used and quantified results. Internships, part-time dev work and even tutoring in a technical subject all count; overseas roles count too, with a line of context.
- Education – your degree, institution, expected completion, plus relevant coursework and a strong WAM/GPA if you have one. For most grads this sits near the top.
- Certifications – cloud, security and data certifications carry real weight in tech; we cover the best per field later.
The right order for a graduate
For a new graduate, a strong order is: header, professional summary, technical skills, projects, experience/internships, education, then certifications. Once you have a couple of years of industry experience, work experience moves above projects and education. Keep it to one page as a graduate, two at most. Now, let’s tailor all of this to each specialisation – with a full sample resume for each.
Software & Web Development
The biggest slice of tech hiring. Employers want to see you can build and ship working software. For software engineering that means strong programming fundamentals and a real stack; for web development, front-end frameworks and responsive, user-focused builds.
- Key skills/keywords: Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, React, Angular, Node.js, REST APIs, Git, SQL, unit testing, Agile/Scrum, data structures and algorithms. Web-focused: HTML, CSS, React or Vue, responsive design, accessibility.
- Certifications that help: AWS Certified Developer or Cloud Practitioner, Microsoft Azure Developer (AZ-204), Oracle Java, and portfolio-building courses like the Meta Front-End Developer certificate.
- What wins: deployed projects with clean GitHub repos, and quantified results (users, performance, test coverage).

For a web developer role, shift the emphasis: lead your skills with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and React or Vue, add responsive design and accessibility, and make your portfolio site the star – front-end employers want to see your work, not just read about it.
Data Science & Data Analytics
One of the fastest-growing fields. Two related but distinct roles: a data analyst leans on SQL, dashboards and business insight, while a data scientist adds machine learning, statistics and coding. Tailor your resume to whichever you are targeting.

Targeting a pure data analyst role? Lead with SQL, Power BI or Tableau and Excel, foreground your dashboard projects and business impact, and go lighter on machine learning. Targeting data scientist? Put machine learning, Python and statistics front and centre, and make your deployed ML project the hero.
AI & Machine Learning
The hottest and most competitive corner of tech. AI and machine-learning roles usually expect strong maths and coding, deep-learning frameworks, and increasingly the ability to work with large language models and deploy models into production (MLOps). Deployed projects matter more here than anywhere.

AI/ML roles are competitive and often expect a Master’s plus strong projects, so let your deployed models and metrics do the talking. Right now, demonstrating hands-on work with large language models, generative AI and MLOps is one of the fastest ways to stand out from other graduates.
Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity is one of Australia’s most in-demand fields, with a real skills shortage. Entry roles include SOC analyst, security analyst and GRC (governance, risk and compliance) analyst. Because you often cannot show years of experience, employers look hard for certifications, hands-on labs and demonstrated curiosity.

If a specialised role is out of reach right now, IT support is the classic way into the industry – help desk, service desk, desktop support and junior sysadmin roles are widely available and value customer service as much as technical skill. It is a superb foot in the door that you can pivot from into any specialisation later.

Even one relevant certification, or “working toward” one, signals commitment and gives your resume valuable keywords. Many can be studied free (for example through IBM SkillsBuild or Coursera audits) with only the exam fee to pay.
Build a portfolio and GitHub
In tech, your public work is part of your resume. Keep your GitHub tidy: clear repository names, a proper README for each project explaining what it does and how to run it, and your best three or four projects pinned. A simple portfolio site (even a free one) that showcases those projects makes a strong impression, and an up-to-date LinkedIn ties it together. Employers genuinely click these links – make sure they see your best work first.
Beat the ATS – and use AI wisely
Match the exact technologies in the job ad (the ATS filters on them), use standard headings, keep the layout single-column and clean, and save as a PDF. AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude are excellent for tailoring a tech resume – paste in the job ad and your resume and ask which keywords to add and how to sharpen your project descriptions and bullets. One rule, though, is absolute:
Never claim a skill you can't defend
The cover letter and common mistakes
A short cover letter helps: say why this company and role, highlight one relevant project, and link your GitHub or portfolio. Keep it to a few tight paragraphs. And avoid the classic tech-resume mistakes:
- No projects or GitHub – the single biggest graduate mistake.
- An uncategorised wall of skills – group them so they are readable and ATS-friendly.
- Listing every technology superficially – depth beats a long, shallow list.
- No quantification – add metrics to projects and experience.
- Not tailoring keywords to each specialisation and job ad.
- Claiming skills you cannot defend in a technical interview.
- Too long – one page as a graduate, two at most.
