Weekend Trips from Adelaide: Beaches, Hills and Wine Regions for Students

Adelaide’s real advantage as a student city is what sits within an hour of it: a genuine beach town, a historic hill village, hand-feeding kangaroos, and two distinct wine regions – all close enough for a single weekend, none of them requiring a flight or an overnight trip.

Beaches: from a free tram ride to a proper day trip

For a quick, no-effort beach fix, Glenelg is the obvious choice – reachable by tram from the city, with the added trick that the tram is free at both ends of the line. For an actual weekend outing rather than an afternoon, Victor Harbor is the better pick: about 70 minutes south, with a walkable causeway out to Granite Island, a genuinely old-fashioned horse-drawn tram across it, and fish and chips at Warland Reserve to finish. LinkSA runs a daily bus service between Adelaide and Victor Harbor via Goolwa, so it is doable without a car, just slower than driving.

The Adelaide Hills: a German village, a summit view, and a koala

• Hahndorf – about 30 minutes from the city, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, with a heritage main street of shops, bakeries and cafes. Southlink runs a weekday bus service between the city and Hahndorf via Glen Osmond Road.
• Mount Lofty Summit – the highest point in the Adelaide Hills at about 710 metres, with uninterrupted views across to Gulf St Vincent. Free to visit, and often paired with Hahndorf or Cleland on the same day.
• Cleland Wildlife Park – about 20 minutes from the city, right near Mount Lofty. Over 130 species roam a largely open, 35-hectare bush setting, and it is one of the few places anywhere in the world where you can actually hold a koala, alongside hand-feeding kangaroos and wallabies.

These three sit close enough together that a single day trip with a car can realistically cover all of them – Mount Lofty for the view, Cleland for the wildlife, Hahndorf for lunch.

Wine regions: Barossa Valley or McLaren Vale?

If wine is the entire point of the trip and you want real depth of choice, the Barossa wins on sheer scale. If you would rather combine a cellar door or two with beach time on the same day, McLaren Vale’s closer distance and coastal proximity make it the easier half-day option.

Car, bus, or tour?

• Hahndorf and Victor Harbor both have a genuine public bus option, so they are realistic without a car – just check current timetables on the Adelaide Metro or LinkSA sites before you go, since regional services run less frequently than city routes.
• Cleland Wildlife Park, the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale are much harder to reach by public transport for a casual day trip. Splitting the cost of a rental car with a few friends, booking a small group tour, or using a rideshare are the realistic options – especially useful for the wine regions, where you also want someone not drinking to drive.

Bottom line

Within about an hour of Adelaide you get a historic German village, a summit view, a koala you can actually hold, a proper beach town, and two distinct wine regions. Hahndorf and Victor Harbor are doable by public bus if you do not have a car; the wine regions and Cleland are worth organising a car, tour or rideshare for. Either way, none of it requires more than a weekend.
